3 Things Burglars Think You Can’t See, But Your Security Cameras Will
No business is perfectly safe from the threat of burglary. Obviously, the key to preventing them is to be prepared, but how do you know what you need to be fully protected?
As they say, you must get into the head of your enemy to understand them. So here are a few things robbers think are their advantage, which can really be used to yours:
- Hidden in the shadows: Most robbers are not risky enough to break-in somewhere in broad daylight. Therefore, most believe they are covered by the dark of the night. Thanks to commercial security systems, this is far from the truth.Most security cameras are now built with better resolution and improved capabilities to capture light. This means they are able to see and record far more in the dark than can be seen with the naked human eye. Not to mention that audio-based intrusion and alarm systems would likely detect any movement they made while trying to break-in.
- The busy seasons are their friend: There are significantly more break ins and robberies during the last two weeks of the year than at any other time. This may be due in part to the robbers’ lack of finances, but may also be a result of burglars assuming that stores will be too busy with the holidays to pay close enough attention.However, the holidays being ripe with burglary attempts is no secret to retailers. If anything, security will be amped up around this time of year. That could mean more staff on location or more security cameras.
- Speed is on their side: Typically, an alarm system for businesses has a built in delay, which ranges from anywhere between 30 seconds to three minutes, before it actually contacts a monitoring company. Even then, 94% to 98% of alarm activations are false, so police may not always be in a hurry to investigate them.However, some high quality alarm systems will immediately contact the monitoring service, and will provide a live feed through the security cameras, so they can quickly determine whether or not to contact law enforcement.
The confidence of burglars may very well be their downfall. Having an effective business security system in place could even make that a sure thing.
